What motivates Estes Neighbors?

Traffic and Safety!

Estes Neighbors are residents and neighbors from thirteen + Chapel Hill neighborhoods who live or work near Estes Drive, a major east-west connector. We want to grow our Estes Neighbors community safely by engaging with Town officials and our neighbors and all those who depend on Estes Drive to remain mobile and safe.

At present, we’ve turned our attention to improving public safety near Estes Elementary and Phillips Middle Schools. Last year we focussed our energy on opposing the AURA development that the Council approved last June. Central to this fight was our belief that adding additional high density developments will endanger pedestrian safety and increase congestion o on a major east west artery in a school zone. For the reason we will continue to monitor new development.

Recent pedestrian and biking accidents heightened neighbors’ concerns about safety.  By banding together to make constructive improvements to the NC Department of Transportation and  Town officials, we made both short and long term safety improvements. We are residents and neighbors from thirteen + Chapel Hill neighborhoods who live or work near Estes Drive, a major east-west connector.  We want to grow our Estes Neighbors community larger by engaging with all those who depend on Estes Drive to remain mobile and safe. We are kids walking, running, and riding bikes, teachers, church goers, YMCA members, parents taking our children to school and piano lessons, delivery staff,  or we are just passing through on our way to work in Raleigh and back home to Chapel Hill or Carrboro.  And of course, we are citizens counting on Estes Drive to remain mobile for emergency vehicles and safe for our children to cross this busy street. Estes Drive Connectivity Project Update – October 2022

Here’s the Town of Chapel Hill’s update on what’s happening with the Estes Drive Connectivity Project for the week of October 24th
*   Internet providers are moving their fiber away from other utilities
*   Utilities to move all wires from the old power poles to the new power poles
*   Negotiations with utility companies to resolve final conflicts and proceed with construction

Estimated completion date: Late Fall 2023
